FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(San Francisco, CA.) On October 1,
2010, the California Court of Appeal, First District (Division Three) issued
a rare published ruling in favor of Carin Johnson in the juvenile case of L.Z.
v. The Superior Court of Contra Costa County. The reversal and published opinion
is all the more remarkable because of the nearly 300 juvenile dependency cases
heard by the First District last year-- only 2% -- less than six total opinions
were published*.
The case involved the lower court denying reunification services to the mother,
based on the premise of admitting "guilt". This meant the child would
have been adopted out by Contra Costa County Social Services. In a huge victory
for parents' rights, the appellate court remanded the case back to the dependency
court so that the mom could instead, begin receiving services.
